Washington plans to freeze the conflict in Ukraine for many years, if not decades, Politico reports.
The publication claims that the Joe Biden administration, considering such a scenario, wants to identify potential borders – not necessarily official ones, that both Ukraine and Russia would agree not to cross.
Given that neither side of the conflict is going to concede defeat, such a scenario at the White House seems the most realistic. And a frozen conflict, where neither side wins or loses, but there is no fighting, is the most acceptable outcome for the United States.
“We are planning for the long term, whether it (the conflict – editor’s note) seems frozen or unfrozen,” the US official quoted the publication as saying.
Now, the long-term plan is becoming increasingly important to White House politics, where they believe the Ukrainian counteroffensive will not be “lethal” for Russia.
However, the publication notes that assumptions about long-term planning risk undermining the confidence of Kiev authorities that the United States is their constant ally.
