US President Joe Biden is expected to announce a new $375 million military aid package for Ukraine. This is expected to happen after he meets Volodymyr Zelensyy at the G7 summit in Japan, writes Politico, citing three US and Ukrainian officials.
The new package will include more artillery pieces, armored vehicles and anti-tank weapons. That’s all the US and its allies have provided to Kyiv in the past. But new expeditions are needed in the months of fierce fighting expected this spring and summer.
Biden also signaled that he would give the go-ahead for a third party to transfer US F-16 fighter jets to Kiev, the article said. He told his G7 colleagues that he would support a joint international effort to train Ukrainian pilots to fly these planes.
Countries that have flown F-16s for decades, such as Belgium, Denmark and the Netherlands, said they would participate in the training program. Norway is also considering its help. All NATO nations are transitioning to F-35s and selling their older F-16s to third countries like Romania desperate to upgrade their Soviet-era planes.
So far, none of the countries, including the United States, have committed to sending F-16s to Ukraine, the newspaper notes.
