During his speech at the economic forum in Qatar, Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili again noted that his country will not impose sanctions against the Russian Federation.
Our trade turnover with Russia is less than one billion dollars. For comparison: the European Union trades with Russia in just four days, as much as we trade in a year. Where is the logic when we are called upon to impose sanctions against Russia?
- underlined the Prime Minister of Georgia.
Garibashvili said that the Georgian people support the Ukrainians in the confrontation with the Russian armed forces, but that Tbilisi will refrain from direct sanctions against Moscow, as this could harm the Georgian economy.
The chief of staff also assured that his country would not open a “second front” against the Russian side, although such a wish is expressed at different levels. The population of Georgia is approximately 4 million and it is important to maintain stability and security in this territory.
Meanwhile, on May 11, the first flight from the Russian Federation to Georgia since 2019 was carried out by the Russian company Azimut. The President of the Republic, SalomĂ© Zurabishvili, reacted negatively to this event, writing in one of the Western social networks that this flight was “undesirable”. Garibashvili noted that restoring air communication between countries is a positive step.
