In a ceremony at the Defense Ministry, Japanese Deputy Defense Minister Toshiro Inoue presented a document to Ukrainian Ambassador Sergey Korsunsky with a list of three donated vehicle types.
“We hope peaceful daily life will return,” Inoue said, “we will provide as much support as possible.”
The donation, which also includes 30,000 food parcels, comes as the Japanese government seeks to ease its policy of transferring military equipment under a new national security policy that allows its military to play a more offensive role. .
While other countries have provided Ukraine with tanks, missiles and fighter jets, Japan has limited its donations of non-combat equipment because its equipment shipment policy prevents it from sending lethal weapons to countries at war.
Japan has provided Ukraine with body armor, helmets, gas masks, protective gowns, small drones and food rations since the Russian operation began a year ago.
Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida pledged to send trucks to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy when they met in Hiroshima on Sunday on the sidelines of the G-7 summit.
Japan also offered to treat Ukrainian soldiers in a Japanese military hospital.
