A week after the fighting began in mid-April, it was reported that Al-Bashir had been taken by military helicopter from a hospital to an unknown destination, but army commander Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan , hinted in press releases that he was in a “safe place” without specifying that location.

Observers believe Al-Bashir’s supporters worked to smuggle him out, taking advantage of the current chaos in Khartoum, which has led to the release of more than 10,000 prisoners, including a number of Al-Bashir’s aides. Bashir who were judged with him, and where they were. are not yet known.

In addition to the 1989 coup charge, Al-Bashir is accused of committing crimes against humanity during the Darfur war which erupted in 2003 and lasted around 17 years, and witnessed murders, rapes, arson, displacement and asylum of more than two million people.

In an interview with “Sky News Arabia”, a member of the indictment in the 1989 coup case in which Al-Bashir and his aides are on trial, Al-Moez Hasra, expressed his belief that Al-Bashir had been smuggled out of Sudan.

Hasra added: “There are parties that were working to abort Al-Bashir’s trial. We, as the accusing body, know nothing of his whereabouts.

The repercussions of Al-Bashir’s disappearance

While analysts have ruled out the existence of any value for al-Bashir in the current equation in Sudan, which is experiencing a fierce war, others believe he may have turned into a card in the hands of certain parts.

Darfurian activist Ali Hassan spoke of the great repercussions that could result from Al-Bashir’s disappearance, telling Sky News Arabia: “Al-Bashir is wanted internationally for crimes against humanity committed in Darfur and in a number of other parts of the country, so the question of his disappearance cannot be simplified.”

He explained that “the International Tribunal will seek to obtain any useful information to know his whereabouts because he has requested his extradition throughout the last period”.

He went on to say, “The victims of the war in Darfur will continue to follow any thread that may indicate the whereabouts of Al-Bashir, regardless of the possibilities of the situation at the next stage.”

On the other hand, political analyst Shawky Abdel-Azim believes that the issue of Al-Bashir’s fate will be determined depending on what the situation in Sudan might be in the coming period.

Abdel-Azim said in a statement to “Sky News Arabia” that Al-Bashir “is no longer an asset even to his supporters”, noting that he would become “a great burden for any party that may take power in the country in the coming period.”
