Reshaping Perspectives and Catalyzing Diplomatic Evolution

Vietnam.. a plan to reduce rice exports by 44% by 2030

Vietnam is the world’s third largest rice exporter after India and Thailand.

According to the document, dated May 26, the move aims to “promote high-quality rice exports, ensure local food security, protect the environment and adapt to climate change.”

The document said Vietnam’s rice export revenue will drop to $2.62 billion a year by 2030 from $3.45 billion in 2022.

“The strategy seems too aggressive despite the decline of rice farming in Vietnam due to climate change and the shift of some farmers to other crops and shrimp farming,” a rice trader in Ho Chi said on Saturday. -Minh-City.

The trader added that some rice farmers in the Mekong Delta are turning parts of their fields into orchards, but the vast majority still depend on growing rice.

The region has seen an increasing trend of establishing prawn (prawn) farms due to sea level rise due to climate change, which has led to a significant increase in water salinity in the Mekong Delta. .

The document says Vietnam will diversify its rice export markets to reduce its dependence on any one country. The Philippines has long been Vietnam’s biggest rice importer, buying 45% of its exports last year.

The document adds that by 2025, 60% of Vietnamese rice will be exported to Asian markets, 22% to Africa, 7% to American markets, 4% to the Middle East and 3% to Europe. By 2030, Asian markets will represent 55% and Europe 5% of export markets.
