Reshaping Perspectives and Catalyzing Diplomatic Evolution

France: UAE’s commitment to climate change confirms its right to COP28

The Mayor confirmed this, in a speech he gave at a conference in Bercy, devoted to trade between France and the Gulf countries, “Critics have emerged saying how we can entrust a Gulf the responsibility of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Convention.”

He explained: “It is because the Gulf countries have collectively committed to this climate transition and have taken measures to meet this challenge, and they also have the natural resources and the financial resources to finance this energy transition, which will be very costly, and it makes sense that COP 28 should be awarded to one of these countries.”

The Mayor again called for “trusting these countries to provide concrete solutions”.

“The old world is the Gulf with the oil, and the new world is the Gulf countries investing heavily in renewable energy,” Le Maire said, noting that “the best proof of all this is the fact that COP28 in Dubai will be chaired by one of these Gulf countries and my friend Sultan Al Jaber.”

On the other hand, the countries of the Gulf Cooperation Council renewed, on Tuesday, their “full support” to the UAE in its hosting of the Conference of the Parties (COP28) scheduled in Dubai at the end of this year, through a meeting exceptional ministerial meeting by videoconference, Monday.

The GCC countries welcomed the appointment of the conference leadership team, in which Dr. Sultan Ahmed Al Jaber, Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology of the United Arab Emirates, is the President-Elect, Shamma Al Mazrouei, Minister of Community Development, is the first Youth Climate Pioneer, and Razan Al Mubarak, Managing Director of the Environment Agency in Abu Dhabi, is the Climate Pioneer for the conference.

Recently, leaders of international forums and organizations concerned with the energy sector affirmed their confidence in the ability of the United Arab Emirates to achieve significant and tangible results in the future of climate action, during its hosting the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP28), in November 2023.

International officials have described the UAE as a pioneer in addressing climate challenges, advancing international efforts to promote sustainable development pathways, and combining, in a balanced manner, economic development, social progress and Environmental Protection.

They commended the exceptional experience of Dr. Sultan bin Ahmed Al-Jaber, Minister of Industry and Advanced Technologies, and President-designate of the COP28 conference in promoting global climate action, based on his great experience in the fields of energy, climate and various sustainability which constitute a driving force for the success of the activities of COP28.
