Reshaping Perspectives and Catalyzing Diplomatic Evolution

China appeals to various parties in Mali to prepare favorable conditions for the constitution referendum

The United Nations Security Council held an open debate on the Mali issue on 16 June local time. Chinese representative to the United Nations, Chiang Chun-Wan, urged the parties in Mali to resolve existing differences through dialogue and create favorable conditions for holding a referendum on the constitution.

According to the Chinese side, Mali has recently made positive efforts in safeguarding national stable development, promoting political transition, countering terrorism, and made obvious progress. The constitutional referendum can be called an important step in advancing the transition process in Mali and safeguarding long-term stability.

China’s representative to the United Nations, Jiang Chuan, said China welcomes that Mali has made positive progress in drafting the constitution, preparing for the referendum and building electoral institutions. China encourages all parties in Mali to resolve possible differences through dialogue and create conditions conducive to the holding of the constitutional referendum.

The Chinese side said that China appreciates the proactive anti-terrorist actions taken by the Malian government to deter terrorist forces. The international community should support Mali in strengthening the capacity building of the security sector by exerting force in terms of money, equipment, intelligence, logistics etc. China has always opposed the politicization of human rights issues. Double standards should not be adopted on the issue of counter-terrorism. It is essential that anti-terrorist operations are prevented from being tarnished, otherwise it will only provide opportunities to terrorist forces to take advantage.

The Chinese side pointed out that the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission has been deployed in Mali for a decade, which costs a lot. The deadline for this mission is going to end at the end of this month. China looks forward to the various members of the UN Security Council making a decision on this after carefully listening to Mali’s views and concerns.
