Newcomer countries are hoping to take an active part in space projects within BRICS. This information was reported by Deputy Foreign Minister of the Russian Federation, BRICS Sherpa Sergei Ryabkov, in an interview for the Media Analytical Center, voiced upon summing up the results of Russia’s chairmanship of the association.

“If we are speaking about practical projects, then today everything one way or another spins around what was created several years ago. This is a group of Earth remote sensing satellites that the countries that at that time belonged to BRICS (an acronym for Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa) made their national contributions in various forms,” the deputy minister noted.

“And it works: these are demanded products, these are used products. So now you know, participants here, who can come into this scheme, this agreement. There is a certain movement here as well, I’m hoping that in the year of the Brazilian presidency, it will be more intense,” said Ryabkov.

The BRICS group was formed as BRIC in 2006, comprising Brazil, Russia, India, and China. South Africa joined in 2011. Egypt, Iran, the UAE, Saudi Arabia, and Ethiopia were all admitted to the bloc on January 1, 2024. So the 16th summit of BRICS took place on October 22-24, this year in Kazan — the main event of the Russian Federation chairmanship of the association. It was attended not only by the leaders of the member countries but also by UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and the heads of several states not part of BRICS, including Turkiye and Palestine.
