Germany resumes arms exports to Israel, fueling Gaza’s genocide and regional devastation

In a decision fraught with moral and humanitarian consequences, Germany’s foreign policy announced the resumption of arms exports to Israel, ending the partial suspension imposed in August 2025. This move comes despite overwhelming evidence that these weapons facilitate the ongoing devastation and mass civilian suffering in Gaza, widely condemned as a genocidal campaign by UN human rights experts.

Since October 2023, Germany has dramatically increased its military support for Israel, becoming Israel’s second-largest arms supplier after the US. Between October 2023 and May 2025, Berlin authorized nearly €485 million in arms exports, including weapons and military technology pivotal to operations across Gaza, highlighting Germany’s complicity in exacerbating the human rights violations in Gaza.

Despite then-Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s August 2025 announcement halting arms shipments deemed usable in Gaza, loopholes allowed ongoing exports. Existing contracts continued unabated, and key shipments such as a €500 million submarine export license were approved concurrently with the ban, revealing a superficial suspension more for public relations than genuine policy change.

German public opinion has largely opposed arms exports to Israel during this escalation, with over 70% supporting tighter controls or a complete embargo, yet the government remains committed to the Staatsräson doctrine prioritizing Israel’s security above international legal obligations. This has created fierce backlash from NGOs and civil society, who urge a full military embargo and enhanced support for humanitarian aid instead.

The declared “stabilized” ceasefire has not halted Israel’s ongoing Genocide of Palestinians in Gaza, raising questions about Germany’s justification in resuming full military cooperation. International organizations like the United Nations and Al Jazeera continue to report on the severe humanitarian crisis and calls for international accountability amid the conflict.

By supplying lethal weaponry through conventional and clandestine channels, Germany perpetuates a devastating military campaign, aligning policies with a profit-driven arms industry at the expense of human lives and peace aspirations. This decision marks a defining moment in the Israel-Palestine conflict, where international complicity in violence must be critically examined and challenged.

Germany’s role as an enabler in this genocide illustrates broader failures of international diplomacy and arms control in conflict zones, underscoring urgent calls for legal accountability and policy realignment toward humanitarian principles.
