MUMBAI — Tata Steel’s Indian operations earned ₹9,908 crore of EBITDA in the June quarter. The entire group, India and Europe together, earned ₹9,370 crore. The difference between those two numbers is what Europe cost, and it is the only figure needed to understand why this stock trades where it does.
Tata Steel closed Monday, August 24, 2026, at ₹186.30 on the National Stock Exchange, up ₹3.30 or 1.80 percent, and finished at the exact high of the session. On the BSE it settled at ₹186.00, up 1.86 percent. Volume was 3.78 crore shares, the heaviest of the month and 44 percent above Friday’s, on a day the Nifty 50 fell 0.14 percent.
Monday’s buying was not about Tata Steel specifically. Global steel, copper, aluminium and zinc prices have been rising through August and the Nifty Metal index is up roughly 16 percent in a month, which lifted Steel Authority of India 3.57 percent and Hindalco 2.37 percent in the same session. What is specific to Tata Steel is the split between the business that converts a higher steel price into profit and the one that does not.

Of the four large Indian metal producers, Tata Steel carries the second-highest price-to-book multiple at 2.28 and the second-lowest return on equity at 11.7 percent. Hindustan Zinc justifies its multiple with a 76.6 percent return. Tata Steel’s is harder to justify on the group numbers, and easier to justify on the Indian ones alone.

Tata Steel Q1 FY27: One Company, Three Different Businesses
The results for the quarter ended June 30, filed on July 30, are best read geography by geography rather than in aggregate.
| Measure | Consolidated | India | Netherlands | United Kingdom |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Revenue | ₹60,794 cr | ₹36,989 cr | €1,445 mn | £484 mn |
| EBITDA | ₹9,370 cr | ₹9,908 cr | €4 mn | -£27 mn |
| EBITDA margin | 15.4% | 27% | 0.3% | Loss |
| Crude or liquid steel production | – | 5.76 mt | 1.55 mt | – |
| Deliveries | – | 5.17 mt | 1.40 mt | – |
| Profit after tax (group) | ₹2,385 crore | |||
| Net debt · group liquidity | ₹84,173 crore · ₹45,950 crore | |||
| Capital expenditure | ₹3,579 crore | |||
| Figures as printed in Tata Steel’s results press release of July 30, 2026. The consolidated EBITDA margin and the Dutch margin are calculated by The Eastern Herald from the revenue and EBITDA lines; the 27 percent India margin is the company’s own. Profit after tax attributable to owners of the company was separately reported at about ₹2,318 crore, after an exceptional loss. | ||||
Set the two productive geographies against each other on a per-tonne basis and the gap stops being a matter of degree. India earned ₹9,908 crore of EBITDA on 5.17 million tonnes delivered, which is about ₹19,164 a tonne. The Netherlands earned €4 million on 1.40 million tonnes, which is €2.86 a tonne. The two figures are in different currencies and the comparison is therefore rough, but no exchange rate closes a gap of that order. On a like-for-like tonne of steel, the Indian business is profitable and the Dutch one is, to a rounding error, not.

What an Investor Is Actually Buying
Strip the arithmetic back and the position is straightforward. An investor in Tata Steel is buying a first-class Indian steel producer running at a 27 percent margin, and paying for it by also funding a Dutch operation that broke even and a British one that lost £27 million in three months. The group’s ₹84,173 crore of net debt sits against ₹45,950 crore of liquidity, so there is no immediate strain, but debt of that size is serviced out of consolidated cash flow, not Indian cash flow.
That framing also explains the day’s move. When the steel price rises, the Indian business converts it at 27 percent and Europe converts it at nearly nothing, so the group’s earnings leverage to a price rally is roughly the Indian leverage diluted by a European drag that does not shrink. The stock goes up on metal-price days because of Jamshedpur, and it stays 16.98 percent below its 52-week high because of IJmuiden and Port Talbot.

| August 24, 2026 | 186.30 | +1.80% | 377.91 lakh |
| NSE closing prices and volumes. Turnover has risen in each of the last four sessions, from 133.93 lakh shares on August 18 to 377.91 lakh on Monday, while the price went nowhere until Monday. | |||
The volume pattern is the interesting part. Turnover climbed for four straight sessions while the price drifted down by half a rupee a day, and then the price moved. Rising volume into a flat market usually means accumulation, and Monday’s close at the day’s high on 3.78 crore shares is consistent with that reading. ₹186.30 is now the level to beat; the 52-week high of ₹224.40 is 20.5 percent above it.
What this article cannot tell you is what happens to Europe. Tata Steel has approved a ₹33,873 crore expansion at its NINL subsidiary in Odisha, which tells you where the group intends to put its capital, but the press release does not set out a timetable for the Dutch and British operations to reach a normal margin, nor what the group would do if they do not. The Netherlands result also reflects a plant shutdown during the quarter, and the release does not quantify how much of the near-zero EBITDA was that disruption and how much is the underlying run rate. Until it does, the group number understates the Indian business and the Indian number overstates the group.
Elsewhere on Monday, Hindustan Zinc rose 1.53 percent to ₹604 on the back of record June-quarter results, while SBI fell 0.88 percent in a seventh decline in eight sessions.
Tata Steel’s June-quarter figures come from the company’s own results press release of July 30, 2026. Closing prices and the scrip identifiers were verified against the BSE’s own quote feed for scrip 500470.
