BENGALURU — BEML came within seven rupees of reclaiming its August high on Tuesday morning and then fell through Monday’s support. Both happened before lunch, on 1.84 lakh shares.
The stock was quoted at ₹1,914.20 on the National Stock Exchange at 11:49 IST, down 80 paise or 0.04 percent on Monday’s close of ₹1,915.00, and at ₹1,915.00 on the BSE. It opened at ₹1,926.00, ran to ₹1,977.00, and then went all the way to ₹1,902.60 before returning to almost exactly where it started. That is a range of ₹74.40, or 3.9 percent of the price, and it is the widest intraday swing of any large Indian defence name on Tuesday. These are live intraday figures from a session that settles at 15:30.
What makes it worth stating rather than simply recording is the volume. Turnover of 1.84 lakh shares extrapolates to about 4.5 lakh for the full session, which is more than three times Monday’s 1.43 lakh but is still, in absolute terms, a very small number for a company worth ₹16,059 crore. The free float here is thin enough that not much money moves the price a long way, in either direction, and Tuesday is a demonstration of it.

| Live intraday figures captured at 11:49 IST on August 25, 2026, about 154 minutes into a session that runs to 15:30. These are last traded prices, not closing prices, and they will change. The BSE reads marginally positive because its Monday close of ₹1,913.30 was below the NSE’s. Valuation ratios and market capitalisation are Screener’s, struck at Monday’s close. | ||
Those two bottom rows remain the argument against the stock. A trailing price-to-earnings ratio of 90 on a return on equity of 4.86 percent is the most expensive combination in the sector by a distance. Mazagon Dock returns 29.2 percent and trades on 35.8 times. BEML returns roughly a sixth as much and costs two and a half times more per rupee of profit, largely because there is so little profit to divide into.
The Round Trip, in Numbers
| Level | Price (₹) | What it is |
|---|---|---|
| 52-week high | 2,275.75 | 15.89% above the current price |
| August 19 intraday high | 1,984.00 | The top of the post-results run |
| Tuesday’s session high | 1,977.00 | Seven rupees short of it |
| Tuesday’s open | 1,926.00 | Above Monday’s close |
| Current price | 1,914.20 | At 11:49 IST, effectively flat |
| Monday’s low, the support going in | 1,908.00 | Broken on Tuesday morning |
| Tuesday’s session low | 1,902.60 | The lowest since August 13 |
| 52-week low | 1,355.00 | 41.27% below the current price |
| Intraday levels are as at 11:49 IST and can extend in either direction before the close. The stock touched both the highest price and the lowest price of the past five sessions within the same morning. | ||
A stock that prints both the best and the worst price of its last five sessions inside one morning is not being repriced on information. It is being moved through a thin book. The ₹1,908 support that had held since August 17 broke, and then the price came back above it anyway, which is what happens when there is no depth on either side.

A Loss-Making Company With the Deepest Order Cover
BEML is the only company in India’s large defence complex still losing money, and it entered this week as the best performing stock in that complex over the month. Reconciling those two sentences is the whole exercise.
| Measure | Q1 FY27 | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Revenue | ₹819.62 crore | Seasonally the weakest quarter |
| EBITDA | About ₹3 crore | An operating margin of 0.37 percent |
| Net result | Loss of ₹27.01 crore | After depreciation, interest and tax |
| Order inflow for the quarter | ₹1,181 crore | Up 171% on ₹435 crore |
| Order book | ₹16,284 crore | About three years and eight months of revenue |
| Figures as reported for the quarter ended June 30, 2026 on August 7, 2026. The order-cover estimate divides the book by last year’s revenue and is calculated by The Eastern Herald; it assumes a flat run rate. The first quarter is seasonally BEML’s weakest, which cuts both ways: the return to positive EBITDA is real, and the bar it cleared was on the floor. | ||
Three crore of EBITDA on ₹819.62 crore of revenue is a rounding error, not an inflection, and the company still lost money once depreciation, interest and tax were accounted for. The order inflow is the more substantial number. ₹1,181 crore in a quarter against ₹435 crore a year earlier takes the book to ₹16,284 crore, which is more cover than Bharat Electronics carries and more than Mazagon Dock carries. On backlog alone, BEML is not the weak name in this group.
What the quarter did not settle is the thing that has to be settled. BEML has been within touching distance of operating breakeven before and slipped back. One positive June quarter, at a margin of a third of one percent, does not establish that the mining and metro businesses have stopped consuming what the defence business earns. The order book says the work exists. Ten years of accounts say converting it profitably is the part BEML has never reliably managed, and neither a single quarter nor a volatile morning has changed that record.

| NSE closing prices and volumes; the final row is live intraday and not a close. The move up from results day ran on 12.5 lakh and 26.4 lakh shares; the drift down since August 19 ran on 2.3, 2.4 and 1.4 lakh. Tuesday’s morning figure paces to roughly 4.5 lakh. | |||
From an intraday low of ₹1,670.50 on August 6, the day before its June quarter, BEML ran to ₹1,984 by August 19, a gain of 18.8 percent in nine trading sessions, on a quarter in which it reported a net loss. It then drifted lower for three sessions on progressively thinner trade, which is the shape of buyers stopping rather than sellers arriving. Tuesday is the first session of the drift where the volume has picked up, and it has picked up in both directions at once.
₹1,984 remains the level to reclaim and the 52-week high of ₹2,275.75 is 15.9 percent further on. Below, ₹1,902.60 is now the floor of the stretch, and the fact that it was made and recovered inside a single morning tells you more about the depth of this order book than about anybody’s view of the company.
Elsewhere in Tuesday’s session, Bharat Dynamics was the only defence name higher, Hindustan Aeronautics fell to within ₹1.60 of its results-day low, and Cochin Shipyard ran Monday’s session backwards. The Nifty 50 was down 0.32 percent.
BEML’s June-quarter figures are drawn from the results the company reported on August 7, 2026. Intraday prices and the scrip identifiers were checked against the exchange’s own quote page for scrip 500048.
