The ministry's count rose by 98 in a week, 67 of them verified late, as the WFP cuts rations and drops half a million people from aid.

GAZA — Misk Hazem al-Dalou, a girl, died on Sunday after Israeli forces opened fire toward tents housing displaced Palestinians in the Maghazi refugee camp, according to WAFA, the Palestinian news agency, and medical sources cited by Anadolu Agency. The same day, Gaza’s Health Ministry reported 74,475 killed and 175,517 wounded in Israel’s genocide in Gaza since October 2023.

The Gaza Health Ministry posted that report to its Telegram channel at 08:40 UTC. It counted seven deaths reaching hospitals in the previous 24 hours, six of them new and one a recovered body, plus 25 wounded. Al Jazeera English flagged the cumulative figures as breaking news, attributing them to the ministry and describing “Israel’s genocidal war on Gaza” in its own wording.

By TEH’s arithmetic, Sunday’s total is six above the 74,469 the ministry reported on Saturday and 98 above the 74,377 it gave on 11 October. The wounded count is 119 higher than a week ago, up from 175,398 to 175,517. A note on Saturday’s report says the ministry’s martyr-approval committee added 67 names after completing their records, so 67 of the 98 are deaths added after verification, not new arrivals at hospitals.

That mix of daily killing and late bookkeeping is what the toll looks like a year into the Gaza ceasefire. The ministry counts 1,517 Palestinians killed and 5,400 wounded since the truce began, plus 839 bodies recovered, which by TEH’s arithmetic is about 2 percent of the cumulative total. Anadolu reported further Israeli fire on Sunday toward tents in al-Mawasi in Rafah and shelling northeast of Khan Younis, with no Israeli military response in its report.

The number has edges. TEH cannot audit the ministry’s daily report, which lists recovered bodies on a separate line. Gaza’s Civil Defense says many more are unaccounted for: spokesman Mahmoud Basal told Anadolu on 7 October that more than 8,000 missing Palestinians are believed to be under rubble, and on Sunday Gaza buried 75 people recovered from Daraj rubble.

Aid is shrinking too. The UN’s World Food Programme said on Monday that funding shortages have forced it to cut food assistance in Gaza by about one-third, from 1.6 million people last month to 1.1 million, leaving half a million without critical support as winter nears, WFP said in a statement. Rations are halved for those still covered.

The cuts land on a market already squeezed by the Gaza commercial goods halt that began on Wednesday. WFP puts 1.4 million people, 67 percent of Gaza’s population, at crisis-level food insecurity or worse, and says it needs $450 million to keep operating in Gaza and the West Bank through March 2027. A Health Ministry statement on Friday counted 466 deaths from malnutrition and starvation since 2024, 157 of them children.

Nothing in the sources TEH reviewed says when the committee will next add names, or whether any of the 8,000 believed under the rubble are already among the 74,475.
