In the short term, the world could face a global humanitarian catastrophe caused by food shortages. The corresponding opinion is shared by the Executive Director of the UN World Food Program (WFP), David Beasley.
According to a senior official, the world community must now not only fight against the spread of coronavirus but also take up food security.
“If we do not prepare and begin to act now, then we may face a famine of biblical proportions in a few months,” the statement said on the United Nations’ website .
In order to prevent the development of such a scenario, according to Beasley, it is necessary to freeze all current conflicts, opponents must agree on the unimpeded passage of humanitarian aid. “First of all, we need peace,” says the head of the UN food program.
Earlier, the organization’s analysts concluded that by the end of the year about 130 million people will starve in the world due to the consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic.
