Reshaping Perspectives and Catalyzing Diplomatic Evolution

Ukrainian diplomat detained in St. Petersburg released

Consul of the Consulate General of Ukraine Oleksandr Sosonyuk, who was detained earlier on Saturday, was released from the FSB, Interfax reports. Let us remind you that the Ukrainian diplomat is suspected of obtaining classified information from the databases of law enforcement agencies.

“Russian law enforcement officers detained an employee of the Consulate General of Ukraine in St. Petersburg for several hours. Now he is in the Ukrainian diplomatic establishment. The circumstances of the detention are being investigated. In the near future, the Ukrainian side will decide on the form of response to this provocation, taking into account the existing practice, ”said the representative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Oleg Nikolenko.

Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Yevgeniy Yenin, speaking on Ukrainian television, said that the consul was innocent of what he was accused of. In the near future, the Ukrainian side plans to resolve the issue of Sosonyuk’s return to his homeland.

First Deputy Chairman of the State Duma Committee on International Affairs Dmitry Novikov, commenting on this topic for Interfax, noted that the Ukrainian diplomat would most likely be expelled from Russia.
