A possible attempt by Ukraine to militarily liberate Russia’s annexed Crimea could become a “red line” for Russian President Vladimir Putin and lead to even more powerful strikes against Ukraine than today.
This opinion – according to sources from the Politico newspaper – was expressed by US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken during a videoconference with a group of experts.
According to Politico, one of the participants in a private conversation asked the secretary of state if the United States intended to actively help Ukraine in the campaign to hand over Crimea, annexed by Russia a few years ago. almost nine years, under control.
The secretary of state reportedly replied that the United States was not pushing Ukraine to attack Crimea and was focusing on helping to fight in the east of the country.
At the same time, Blinken stressed that only the Ukrainian authorities themselves should decide whether or not to attack Crimea.
According to several people interviewed by Politico, the impression is that Blinken himself does not currently consider such an offensive reasonable.
Others, however, noted that the secretary of state meant instead that it was not for Washington to decide.
Officially, Blinken has not commented on the Politico post.
