Britain and its NATO allies, in the context of military support for Ukraine, have allowed their own stockpiles of weapons to be reduced to “dangerously low levels”. On this subject said in the report of the British Parliamentary Defense Committee, published on March 7.
“The lack of resupply in the UK not only compromises our ability to resupply in Ukraine, but also to counter any threat to our own security,” the document said.
According to the report, it will take at least 10 years for the UK to rebuild and increase arms stocks to a “sustainable level”. The defense committee also concluded that the way Western governments procure weapons “does not serve the purpose”. In this regard, it is recommended that the British Ministry of Defense prepare an action plan aimed at strengthening the defense industrial potential and reducing the time required for the replenishment of arms stocks.
In mid-February, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said that the military conflict in Ukraine “is consuming a huge amount of ammunition and depleting the stocks of allies”. Western countries, according to the Secretary General, do not have time to produce shells at the same high rate at which they are spent, as a result, there is a burden on the defense industry.
In this context, the US Department of Defense announced a review of its arms stocks and a possible increase in the defense budget.
