The US Secret Service, in its annual threat assessment report, called Russia’s nuclear arsenal the most powerful in the world. According to US analysts, Moscow is improving long-range missiles and underwater “delivery systems”.
Russia is developing and modernizing “an extensive, diverse and modern range of non-strategic systems” capable of carrying both nuclear and conventional warheads, the report said.
On February 21, Russian President Vladimir Putin offered to suspend participation in START. The next day, the deputies of the State Duma and the Federation Council unanimously voted for this decision. Many political and military experts argue that the suspension of Russia’s participation in the START treaty does not mean a willingness to use nuclear weapons.
Earlier, Glavny Regionalny announced that Russia would reactivate a nuclear test site in the Arctic to test new types of weapons.
