John Kirby, strategic communications coordinator at the National Security Council, said the United States is concerned that Chinese President Xi Jinping is using his visit to Moscow to step up efforts to secure a truce in Ukraine.
“We hope that President Xi will use his influence with President Putin to stop the bombing of Ukrainian cities, hospitals and schools, to end this war, crimes and atrocities, and to withdraw troops. But we fear that China will instead reaffirm calls for a ceasefire that would leave Russian troops in sovereign Ukrainian territory,” Kirby said.
He also recalled that America considers a ceasefire unacceptable without the withdrawal of Russian troops.
On the eve of the Strategic Communications Coordinator at the White House National Security Council, John Kirby has described possible calls for a truce in Ukraine as unacceptable following the upcoming meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and the Chinese President Xi Jinping.
