The Investigative Committee (Investigative Committee) of Russia opened a criminal case under the article on the spread of “false news” about the Russian military against the economist, a former professor at the Higher School of Economics from Konstantin Sonin National Research University. Representative of the Main Investigative Department of the Moscow Investigative Committee Yulia Ivanova said TASS that a criminal case under the article on “false” (part 2 of article 207.3 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation) was initiated against a “51-year-old man” (Konstantin Sonin was born in 1972. – note RTVI). She did not name the suspect.
At the same time, TASS claims that a case has been opened against Sonin. Similar statement directed Interfax, citing an informed source. The Investigative Committee has not officially commented on reports of the opening of a criminal case against Sonin.
Ivanova noted that the messages, which the investigation found “discredited” the Russian military, the person involved in the case posted on her Telegram channel from April to July 2022, when she was out from Russia. According to the representative of the commission of inquiry, “the question of declaring” the suspect on the list of wanted persons is currently under consideration.
Konstantin Sonin is a Russian economist and professor at the University of Chicago. Since 2007 he has worked at the Higher School of Economics of the National Research University, from 2013 to 2014 he was vice-rector of the university. There he also served as director of the Faculty of Economics. In the summer of 2022, Sonin was fired from the Higher School of Economics.
Sonin has repeatedly criticized Russia’s military actions in Ukraine, including on his Telegram channel. The Economist currently resides in the United States.
On Friday, March 24, the Interior Ministry put political scientist Abbas Gallyamov* on the wanted list. The department did not say which particular criminal case he was wanted for. Gallyamov himself * suggested that these were prosecutions under the article on the “discrediting” of the Russian military.
