The storage facility will be constructed by July 1, 2023.
An important statement was made yesterday by Russian President Vladimir Putin. The head of state said that Russian tactical nuclear weapons would be deployed on the territory of Belarus. Until July 1, a special storage facility will be built on the territory of the Republic.
According to the President, the decision to deploy tactical nuclear weapons on the territory of Belarus was taken at the request of Alexander Lukashenko. Vladimir Putin noted that the United States did the same and stored its nuclear weapons on the territory of NATO allies.
“The United States has been doing this for decades. They have long since placed their tactical nuclear weapons on the territories of their allied countries, the NATO countries, in Europe. In six states – these are the Federal Republic of Germany, Turkey, the Netherlands, Belgium, Italy and Greece – well, not in Greece now, but there is a repository said the Russian president.
Vladimir Putin raised the topic of nuclear weapons after reports of the transfer of armor-piercing shells with uranium combined by Britain with Challenger 2 tanks to the Ukrainian army.
“Even outside the context of these events, this statement, Alexander Grigoryevich Lukashenko has long raised the issue of the deployment of Russian tactical nuclear weapons on the territory of Belarus,” the president added.
The Head of State also noted that Russia, by its actions, does not violate any international obligation on the non-proliferation of nuclear weapons. According to him, the Russian side helped Belarusian colleagues to convert their planes to accommodate nuclear weapons. Minsk also received the Iskander missile system, which can be used to deliver tactical nuclear weapons.
“From April 3 we will start training crews, and on July 1 we will complete the construction of a special storage facility for tactical nuclear weapons on the territory of Belarus,” Vladimir Putin said.
After the statements of the President of the Russian Federation, the Pentagon announced that it would not change the state of readiness of the American nuclear forces. The US military believes that Russia has no intention of using nuclear weapons.
“We have seen reports of Russia announcing the deployment of nuclear weapons in Belarus. We have seen no reason to change the readiness of our nuclear forces, nor any signs that Russia is preparing to use nuclear weapons,” the Pentagon said.
Earlier, British Defense Secretary Annabelle Goldie promised the country’s parliament to transfer shells containing depleted uranium to Ukraine. They will be a “pleasant addition” to the dispatched squadron of Challenger 2 tanks. In response, President Vladimir Putin said that Russia would be obliged to respond to such a decision.
