Reshaping Perspectives and Catalyzing Diplomatic Evolution

The biggest auto show Seoul Mobility Show 2023 starts in Seoul. How will the global auto industry live in the near future?

Seoul Mobility Show 2023 is the first Korean auto show in three years to be held without any coronavirus restrictions. The organizers clearly tried to show that everything was back to normal, and the industry wasted no time in inventing new directions for development. This time, a total of 160 Korean and foreign companies are participating in the event, of which 12 are finished vehicles. However, experts quickly noticed from the composition of the participants that this time not all the giants of the global automotive industry came to Seoul. The number of manufacturing companies is lower than it was in the “pre-coronavirus” years, but this gap should be eliminated as early as 2025, when there will be another auto show in Seoul.Of course, Korean manufacturers, including giants such as Hyundai, Kia, Genesis, Renault Samsung and KG Mobility, dominate here as owners. The latest venture is the name-changing Ssangyong, which has returned to the showroom after a four-year hiatus.
It is no coincidence that the name of the event now sounds like Mobility Show, and not just “car show”. What until recently seemed like some kind of distant future is already turning into a familiar reality or something that will appear very soon on the roads, and not just on the roads – even in the air. This exhibition also features flying cars which, according to the promises of the Seoul authorities, will start operating in the South Korean capital in two years. The launch of the flying taxi service is scheduled for 2025.If we summarize in several combinations the main trends that are expected to dominate the global automotive industry, then these will be electric cars, unmanned vehicles and flying cars. Of course, “ordinary” cars with internal combustion engines are also presented at the exhibition, but at the Seoul Mobility Show 2023, it seems that it is already “retro”, and everything that is flying, autonomous and environmentally friendly. he environment is now fashionable. If we talk about specific models and the most notable premieres, then it is certainly worth noting the eighth modification of the Hyundai Motor Sonata series – its official name is Sonata the Edge. According to company employees, this model will be the last in a range of the well-known Sonata series around the world, and it is intended “for people living a unique life”. Indeed, the design of this model is clearly different from previous Sonatas by its dynamic, sporty and modern look. Hyundai Motor is also showcasing two concept cars, the RN22e and NVision 74, and in total, this top Korean automaker is showcasing 13 types of cars at the show.It seems that the Korean manufacturers have decided to bet on electric vehicles, since there were enough new modifications in this segment: it is the new Kona model of the same Hyundai, and the SUV EV9 of Kia Motors, for the first from which this show car was chosen, and immediately several versions of KG Mobility’s electric SUVs, including an electric version of the Torres EVX. Judging by the range of cars presented by KG Mobility, the company changed its name from Ssangyong, but the commitment to SUVs remained the same.
Genesis Motor, which is Hyundai Motor’s own luxury car brand, grabbed attention with some interesting X-series concept cars, while Renault Samsung introduced the two-seater QM Quest, which is essentially the transformation from a small SUV to a sedan. The foreign giants haven’t lagged behind the hosts either. Mercedes-Benz presents models such as the EQE (electric SUV), the AMG EQE sedan, the SL Roadster and more. Interestingly, Mercedes also presented its first hydrogen model. This honor went to iX5. In total, the manufacturer brought 11 models to Korea, five of which are presented here for the first time. Also, for the first time at the Seoul Auto Show, the famous American electric vehicle manufacturer Tesla, towards which South Korea has a mixed attitude, appeared. On the one hand, it is fashionable, modern and prestigious, and on the other hand, there are complaints about service and safety, which is why Korean companies successfully compete with Tesla in their market. Anyway, for Tesla, the current show is a debut in Korea, and it shows the Model X, Plaid models. It should be noted that the American company is even demonstrating a prototype of its humanoid robot Tesla Bot.A lot of controversy and certainly a lot of attention has attracted automotive startup Alpha Motor from the United States. Its founder is a Korean living in the United States, but he decided to show his first models in his historic homeland. These are electric trucks Wolf and Wolf Plus, on the prospects of which diametrically opposed opinions have already been expressed. As already mentioned, the Seoul Mobility Show 2023 is not only about cars, but about “movement” in general. Therefore, companies working in the field of unmanned vehicles, flying cars and motion control systems in all environments actively participate in the exhibition.
Thus, the Korean leader in the field of telecommunications SK Telecom offers to dive into the world of virtual reality, where it will be possible to experiment with the mobile transport infrastructures of the near future, in particular the simulation of an air taxi flight. The same company also introduced Nugu Auto, an intelligent platform for cars.V Space, which was the first in Korea to successfully pilot a flying car, introduces a new “air” VTOL car. KAIST, known as one of Korea’s most prestigious technical universities and advanced research centers, will showcase an autonomous ship.”Here are presented not only finished cars, but also all types of services for moving in any environment – on land, on water and in the air,” said the director of the organizing committee of the event, Kang Nam Hoon, expressing the hope that the exhibition will attract the attention of a large number of visitors.According to the forecast of the organizers, this year they expect more than half a million guests, for which a large number of various events are planned, where those who wish can personally not only “sit”, but also ride or even fly on the cars of the future. Conferences and forums will be organized for experts and business representatives. The Seoul Mobility Show 2023 will last ten days and end on April 9.
