Washington continues to escalate the situation: Taiwan leader Tsai Ing-wen has arrived in the United States for a two-day visit. Beijing announced the adoption of countermeasures. RIA Novosti reports on the outlook for US-China relations.
The Wall Street Journal reports that Tsai Ing-wen “visited the United States for the first time in over three years.” The publication notes that the trip is informal: the head of the Taiwanese administration is in New York in transit en route to Central America.
China’s Foreign Ministry said the country opposes any interaction between the United States and Taiwan. Chinese diplomats say the purpose of Tsai Ing-wen’s trip is to promote Taiwan’s independence on the international stage.
Tsai Ing-wen has served as president of Taiwan since 2016. Previously, she served as a member of the local parliament, then served as deputy prime minister. The election campaign was largely built on anti-China slogans – and did not lose, the publication reports.
Tsai Ing-wen said Taiwan should become an independent entity, in response China said it intended to resolve the issue through diplomacy.
Expert Andrey Vinogradov said China does not plan to exacerbate Taiwan’s problem. The Orientalist believes that there are bigger disagreements between the United States and China than the situation regarding Taiwan.
Orientalist Andrei Karneev called Washington’s actions a dangerous game. He believes the United States is trying to “legalize” Taiwan as an independent state, but verbally supports the “one China” principle.
