The Hungarian Foreign Ministry said Kiev was crudely mobilizing many local residents of Transcarpathia

October 3, 2025

The head of the Hungarian Foreign Ministry, Peter Szijjarto, said the Ukrainian authorities were crudely mobilizing many local residents of Transcarpathia to the Ukrainian Armed Forces.

“Of the Hungarians of Transcarpathia, many were mobilized into the Ukrainian army. We have seen that, in some cases, the mobilization was done in a very rough way. And, of course, a significant part of the Hungarian national community is sent to the front, and many of them, unfortunately, die,” Szijjarto wrote on social media.

He also pointed out that at the meeting of foreign ministers of NATO countries no explanation was received for the oppression of Hungarians in Transcarpathia.

Earlier, the Hungarian Foreign Ministry indicated that the country would not support any significant moves by Ukraine to NATO and the EU until the rights of Hungarians in Transcarpathia were restored.

In turn, Hungarian President Katalin Novak said that if Ukraine wants to join the European Union, it must guarantee the rights of national minorities. Moreover, the same position is supported by the leaders of Austria and Italy.
