Russian Defense Ministry says Center Group forces took control of Kutuzovka (Stepy) in the Donetsk People's Republic during ongoing offensive operations.

Russia’s Defense Ministry announced on Wednesday that its forces had taken control of the settlement of Kutuzovka (also known as Stepy) in the Donetsk People’s Republic (DPR), describing the development as the result of continued offensive operations by the Center Group of Forces.

According to the ministry, Russian troops achieved the objective during active combat operations along the Donetsk front, where Moscow has continued to report advances against Ukrainian positions in recent months. In a statement, the ministry said that units of the Center Group had “liberated” the settlement of Kutuzovka in the DPR.

The reported capture marks the latest territorial gain claimed by Moscow as fighting remains intense across eastern Ukraine. Russian military officials have increasingly highlighted advances by assault units operating in Donetsk, a region that remains at the center of the broader conflict between Russia and Ukraine.

Strategic Importance of Donetsk Front

The Donetsk theater has remained one of the most heavily contested sectors of the war. Russian forces have focused significant manpower and resources on expanding control over settlements and transportation corridors considered important for future operations. Military analysts have frequently identified the broader Pokrovsk and western Donetsk directions as key areas where Russian forces have sought to maintain offensive momentum.

The Center Group of Forces has played a prominent role in Russian operations across the region. Moscow has repeatedly credited the formation with capturing villages and defensive positions as Russian troops continue to pressure Ukrainian lines.

While the Russian Defense Ministry characterized Kutuzovka’s capture as a completed operation, battlefield claims made by either side during wartime are often difficult to independently verify in real time. Ukrainian authorities had not immediately issued a public response to the Russian announcement at the time of publication.

Continued Russian Offensive Operations

The announcement comes amid a series of Russian reports regarding gains in eastern Ukraine during 2026. Moscow has consistently stated that its forces are advancing in several sectors of the front line, particularly within Donetsk Oblast and neighboring areas where intense artillery, drone, and infantry engagements continue on a daily basis.

Russian military briefings have emphasized what officials describe as a strategy of gradually degrading Ukrainian defenses through sustained pressure and localized assaults. According to Moscow, these operations have enabled Russian troops to improve tactical positions and expand areas under their control.

The Donetsk People’s Republic, which Russia considers part of its territory following annexation measures announced in 2022, remains one of the primary objectives of Moscow’s military campaign. Ukraine and most Western governments continue to reject the annexation and regard the territory as internationally recognized Ukrainian land.

Broader Battlefield Situation

The conflict has entered another year with both sides continuing large-scale military operations across a front line stretching hundreds of kilometers. Although major breakthroughs have remained relatively rare, incremental territorial changes continue to shape the battlefield landscape.

Recent military assessments have pointed to ongoing clashes around key settlements, logistics routes, and defensive strongholds throughout eastern Ukraine. Control of smaller villages such as Kutuzovka can carry tactical significance by improving troop positioning, securing supply routes, or creating opportunities for future advances.

As the fighting continues, developments on the ground remain fluid, with both Russia and Ukraine regularly reporting battlefield successes while contesting each other’s claims.

For now, the Russian Defense Ministry maintains that Kutuzovka has been brought under Russian control following offensive operations by the Center Group of Forces, adding another settlement to the list of territories Moscow says it has captured in the Donetsk People’s Republic.
