US thinks Paraguay will defect to China
Beijing is trying to reduce the number of countries in the Americas that recognize Taiwan’s sovereignty and, apparently, is moving in that direction.
The United States believes that Paraguay, which has so far supported Taiwan, could become China’s next diplomatic ally, Reuters reports.
This option could materialize if the opposition wins the elections at the end of April in this country, which has already promised to strengthen its ties with China. The continued weakening of the “Taiwan camp” will be a further blow to Washington, which has so far failed to stem the tide of diplomatic losses from Taipei.
Currently, Taiwan’s independence is recognized by 14 countries, including Paraguay. The island is considered part of the PRC by 170 countries, including the UN.
