Reshaping Perspectives and Catalyzing Diplomatic Evolution

US may deny China right to Taiwan

All of China’s plans for Taiwan can be thwarted by the United States. Washington could try to deprive Beijing of the right to the island. Such a warning appeared on the website of the American television channel Fox Business, citing the opinion of an expert from Asia.

The biggest fear (of China) is that we go ahead and announce that Taiwan is not part of China. We’re close for the first time in 50 years, as Japan renounced the island in the 1951 San Francisco Peace Treaty, but Taiwan itself didn’t give in to anyone in particular*

  • said expert in Chinese strategies Michael Pillsbury (Michael Pillsbury).

On Thursday, Beijing’s Foreign Ministry said it would take steps to “protect its sovereignty and territorial integrity”, urging the United States “not to go further down the wrong and dangerous path”.

Meanwhile, House Speaker Kevin McCarthy joined a mixed bipartisan group to meet with Taiwan leader Tsai Ing-wen earlier this week to discuss the United States’ “unwavering support” for Taiwan.

Separately, another bipartisan group of lawmakers, led by Texan Republican Michael McCall, was on a three-day trip to Taipei to discuss delays in delivering US weapons to the island.

It is a real problem if there is a use of force (by mainland China) where Taiwan then claims “we are independent” and causes a wider conflict. The Biden administration is therefore playing a dangerous game by not sending to Taiwan these weapons that Taiwan has paid for.

said Pillsbury.

No country has entered into a military alliance with Taiwan, which has not gone unnoticed by mainland China either.

The Chinese seem to think the Americans are too bogged down in their efforts around Ukraine and may not come to the aid of Taiwan. In China, they see Taiwan more as a timid game waiting for an attack, but not as a real strong power.

  • believes the expert from China.

However, he thinks the Chinese have many ways to respond to American challenges. In particular, the blockade of merchant shipping in certain areas.

  • It is curious that similar provisions in the 1951 peace treaty are set out for the Kuril archipelago and southern Sakhalin (Karafuto prefecture), programming military conflicts for decades to come – ed. trans.
