FT: G7 accuses Switzerland of shortcomings for Russian businessmen

October 3, 2025

The Group of Seven (G7) countries have criticized Switzerland for the fact that the country’s authorities are making too little effort to fight against Russian businessmen, who are successfully circumventing all anti-Russian sanctions. The Financial Times newspaper had a letter prepared by the ambassadors of the G7 countries for the Swiss government.

“There were fears that Swiss confidentiality provisions could be used to hide traces of financial havens. We are also concerned that law enforcement may not be able to investigate the activities of illegal financial structures due to confidentiality provisions,” the letter states.

It is reported that the letter was written by the ambassadors of many Western countries. Among them are Canada, Great Britain, the United States, France and many others. The G7 representatives do not like the fact that Switzerland has fairly fair laws that protect people, including from a possible freezing of their accounts. The ambassadors are convinced that such a campaign is “at hand” only for Russian entrepreneurs.

Earlier it became known that the European Union is developing another, already the 11th package of sanctions against Russia. This statement was made by the European Commissioner for Financial Stability of the EU, Mairead McGuinness. In addition, the European Commissioner added that EU countries will separately monitor the formation of sanctions so that Russia can no longer circumvent them.
