International organizations: It is almost impossible to provide humanitarian services in Khartoum

October 14, 2023

Today, international organizations said that it is almost impossible to provide humanitarian services in and around the Sudanese capital, Khartoum. The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies has warned that Sudan’s health system is at risk of collapse.

Fred Ayyur, head of delegation of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies in Sudan, explained to reporters “The truth is that at present it is almost impossible to provide any humanitarian services in and around Khartoum”. He added that appeals came out from various organizations, and there are those who are stranded and asking for their evacuation..

Ayur warned that if the unrest in the Sudanese health system continues “It will almost collapse”. For her part, Margaret Harris, a spokeswoman for the World Health Organization, said: “Attacks on health care (facilities) are a flagrant violation of humanitarian law and the right to health care, and must stop now”.

Harris explained that hospitals in Khartoum are severely short of life-saving supplies, and that power outages make it difficult to provide basic services. She added “It is extremely dangerous for anyone to move anywhere, which makes it very difficult for medical staff to reach hospitals”.

In addition, Volker Türk, the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, called in a statement to give priority to logic and the need to work to calm tensions. Fighting between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces has killed dozens of civilians so far, while the international community called for an end to the fighting and resort to dialogue.
