Moscow When a powerful explosion rocked a Russian town bordering Ukraine, locals thought it was a Ukrainian attack. But soon the Russian military admitted that it was a bomb accidentally dropped by a Russian warplane. Belgorod is about 40 kilometers (25 mi) from the border and has a population of 340,000. The city has been subject to regular drone attacks for which Russian officials blame Ukraine. The eruption late on Thursday was much more powerful than previously expected.
Eyewitnesses said the explosion shook nearby buildings and caused a car to fall onto the roof of a store. The explosion caused a 20-metre (66-foot) wide crater and shattered windows in several houses, damaged several cars and injured two residents. A third person had to be hospitalized due to high blood pressure.
Following the explosion, Russian commentators and military bloggers discussed what weapon Ukraine had used in the attack. But about an hour later, the Russian Defense Ministry acknowledged that the explosion was caused by a bomb accidentally dropped by its Su-34 bomber. The ministry did not give any further details, but military experts said the bomb weighed around 500 kg.
