Foreign Ministry says Russia has no intention of going down nuclear escalation route, but advises against provoking

October 3, 2025

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation has indicated that Russia does not intend to follow the path of nuclear escalation, but advised not to provoke the country.

“We will do everything to prevent the development of events according to the worst scenario, as the Russian leadership has repeatedly said,” said Maria Zakharova, spokeswoman for the department.

She also stressed that there is no need to doubt the resolve of the Russian side and test it in practice.

Russia’s core interests are being deliberately violated, and the stakes are also being raised in the confrontation with the Russian Federation to test the country’s “pain threshold”, Zakharova noted. According to her, America, trying to put pressure on Russia, believes that it is able to control the situation within the limits that suit it in any case.

The day before, the head of the US Department of Energy’s National Nuclear Security Administration, Jill Hruby, had said that the United States wanted Russia to return to START III.
