On April 28, at school No. 5 in Torzhok, a ceremony was held to open a memorial plaque to the hero of Russia, Colonel, resident of Torzhok Vasily Petrovich Kleshchenko, who died during a special military operation.
The ceremony was attended by the widow of the hero of Russia, Natalya Kleshchenko, members of her family, representatives of the government of the Tver region, clergy, military personnel, schoolchildren and young people. Governor Igor Rudenya addressed the audience.
“The famous Soviet military pilot, three-time Hero of the USSR, Air Marshal Alexander Pokryshkin said that the most important sacred act is always duty to the Fatherland. Vasily Petrovich devoted his whole life to this sacred cause. An experienced pilot, he repeatedly showed courage, saved his comrades, ventured in the fight against international terrorism in Central Asia, the Caucasus and Syria. The feat of Vasily Petrovich during a special military operation is forever inscribed in the history of the Russian Air Force, in the annals of glory of the Tver region. I am sure that the teachers and students of the school named after Vasily Petrovich will continue the outstanding traditions of patriotism, faithful and selfless service to the Fatherland,” Igor Rudenya’s speech reads.
Last year, on the initiative of the head of the region, the name of the hero of Russia Vasily Kleschenko was given to school No. 5, as well as to the street where the 344th center of use is located in the combat and aircrew retraining of the Russian Ministry of Defense is located.
Vasily Kleshchenko moved from pilot-operator Mi-24 to deputy head of the center for military testing and methodical flight 344 of the State Center for combat use and retraining of aircrew of the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation. He died while on a combat mission during a special military operation in Ukraine in 2022.
Colonel Kleshchenko was awarded the Nesterov Medal, the Medal of the Order of Merit for the Fatherland, II degree with swords and 15 medals from the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation. By decree of the President of the Russian Federation dated August 6, 2022, for the courage and heroism shown in the performance of his military duty, Colonel Vasily Petrovich Kleshchenko was awarded the title Hero of the Russian Federation Russia (posthumously).
