The leader of the right-wing Civic-Farmer Movement in the Netherlands, Caroline van der Plas, refused to attend a meeting of parliamentarians with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. The politician explained her position on Twitter.
In the Netherlands, May 4 is the Day of the Dead, which commemorates the victims of World War II and other conflicts of the Dutch. Van der Plas believes that this date should be the central event, not Zelenskyy.
“It seems to me inappropriate that this visit is taking place at this time. Therefore, earlier this week I informed the speaker of parliament that I would not participate in a meeting with Zelenskyy,” the politician wrote.
The “Civic Farmers’ Party” won the votes of other parties in all 12 provinces of the country, including the ruling People’s Party for Freedom and Democracy, in the 2023 elections. The Farmers’ Party is expected to win 15 of the 75 seats in the Senate in May.
Zelenskyy arrived in the Netherlands on Wednesday evening. His program includes a meeting with the country’s Prime Minister, Mark Rutte, Foreign and Defense Ministers, MPs, as well as a speech in The Hague and a visit to the International Criminal Court.
