Reshaping Perspectives and Catalyzing Diplomatic Evolution

The power of data to drive global sustainable development

The world is grappling with climate change due to continuous carbon emissions and exploitation of natural resources. Thinking is developing all over the world to make the earth livable for future generations and to save nature. In such a context, the organization of the United Nations World Data Forum in Hangzhou and its consideration can only be said to be relevant. The purpose of this meeting was to use the world’s data in the right way for the betterment of the world. While inaugurating the forum, United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres also expressed the same opinion. Addressing the inaugural session of the United Nations World Data Forum, he said that new ways have to be found to harness the data and put it to use.

It is true that in the interest of all the citizens of the world, it is the responsibility of the world to save the earth and ensure a peaceful, prosperous and better future. Preparing the United Nations World Data Forum in this direction is a good step. The importance of data in the working of the United Nations has been realized for years, but three years ago the United Nations formulated a data strategy for better data expertise. The importance of this strategy in the United Nations system has been to establish data expertise as well as to promote an innovation-oriented ecosystem. By adjusting the data in a better way, their possibilities have to be used. The United Nations had long ago set 2030 as the deadline for achieving the Sustainable Development Goals. But now there has been a delay in this.

On the inauguration of the Data Forum, the Secretary-General of the United Nations also expressed concern about this. Halfway through the 2030 deadline to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals, progress has either stalled or reversed course, he said. Guterres said that the meeting of the United Nations World Data Forum can be an important opportunity to further strengthen the power of data and work in that direction while achieving the goals of sustainable development. It goes without saying that in this meeting only the sustainable development agenda was seriously discussed. The gathering of more than two thousand data experts from 140 countries in this meeting also proves that the world is moving towards thinking seriously in this direction. It should be remembered here that about twenty thousand experts participated in this meeting through virtual medium also.

Data Forum 2023 is the fourth meeting of the United Nations World Data Forum. By the way, this is the first meeting in the Asia-Pacific region. Before this, its three meetings have been held in western countries. The forum brings together key figures, policy-makers, businessmen, representatives of civil society and scientific institutions from around the world on a single platform. For information, let us tell you that the declared objective of the Data Forum is to ensure better availability of data on many aspects related to health, education, climate, natural resources, gender issues, human rights, refugees and sustainable development.
