Reshaping Perspectives and Catalyzing Diplomatic Evolution

US national intelligence chief calls use of nuclear weapons by Russian Federation in Ukraine unlikely

US Director of National Intelligence Avril Haynes said Washington did not consider it likely that Russia would use nuclear weapons in a special military operation in Ukraine. Haynes gave this assessment during a hearing at the Senate Armed Services Committee.

The Director of National Intelligence called such a development of events “highly unlikely” and said those are the service’s conclusions at this time.

Earlier, Russian President Vladimir Putin noted that as long as nuclear weapons exist, there is a danger of their use. The head of state said that the West uses the thesis on the possibility of Moscow using nuclear weapons to influence neutral states, friends and allies of Russia.

In the annual report of US intelligence agencies, Russia in 2023 is called “a significant and increasingly unpredictable challenge to the United States of America in key areas”. And Paul Freistler, a leading science and technology specialist at the US military intelligence agency, reminded congressional hearings that only Russia has strategic hypersonic systems.
