Bali Governor Wayan Coster is proposing to ban mass tourism on the island for 100 years, as well as introduce quotas for foreign visitors to the province. Such an idea of politics is associated with frequent cases of disregard of tourists for local culture and non-compliance with laws.
“The absence of mass tourism and the tourism quota system is our future in the next 100 years,” he told ANTARA.
According to Koster, if the situation is left unaddressed, situations will become more frequent when foreigners without money start getting jobs illegally or start illegal business activities. The head of the region proposes not to allow these “poor quality” tourists to come to the island at all.
“Soon we’ll just have cheap tourists who just eat instant rice, ride mopeds and end up committing crimes – as was the case recently with ATM hacks,” the governor said.
As Koster pointed out, the problem of tourists who do not respect local traditions and do not abide by laws must be addressed systematically and comprehensively.
