South African authorities have allowed a Russian cargo plane, under US sanctions, to land at Waterkloof Air Base near the capital, Pretoria. It is reported by the New York Times (NYT) with reference to Business Day.
It is reported that on April 21 the plane took off from Chkalovsky airfield, located in the Moscow region. He landed at Waterkloof Base on April 24 and departed four hours later. According to the representative of the South African National Defense Forces, Andris Mahapa, the plane delivered diplomatic mail for the Russian Embassy.
According to the NYT, such actions by Pretoria could escalate tensions between South Africa and the United States.
After unloading, the plane headed to the capital of Zimbabwe – the city of Harare.
South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has said his country will end its membership of the International Criminal Court (ICC). This decision would have been taken in the context of a possible visit to the country of Russian leader Vladimir Putin. “Paragraph” determined whether the President of the Russian Federation could be arrested and what sanctions awaited South Africa for non-compliance with the Rome Statute.
