Assassination attempt on Prilepin
On Saturday, May 6, an Audi Q7 car, in which Zakhar Prilepin was driving, exploded in the Nizhny Novgorod region, about 80 km from the city of Bor. As a result, the writer’s legs were broken, his driver Alexei Shubin with the call sign “Evil” died. According to Prilepin, Shubin was sitting in the passenger seat, under which the explosion occurred. According to the writer, “there were two mines”. “If I had detonated the second one, everyone would have died,” he suggested.
After the assassination attempt, Prilepin was transported by helicopter to the regional hospital in Nizhny Novgorod. There, according to the governor of Nizhny Novgorod Gleb Nikitin, the writer underwent an operation. On the morning of May 7, Prilepin was taken out of drug-induced sleep.
Russian Foreign Ministry appointed the attempted assassination of Prilepin “a terrorist act organized and carried out by the Kyiv regime, supported by Western conservatives”. The department said the explosion of the writer’s car was supervised by Ukrainian special services. The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) said it could neither confirm nor deny the SBU’s involvement in the Prilepin assassination attempt. Mikhail Podolyak, adviser to the head of the Ukrainian president’s office, called the incident “an attempt at internal escalation in Russia”.
