Islamabad: Pakistan’s former Prime Minister Imran Khan is likely to remain in National Accountability Bureau’s (NAB) custody for four to five days. Mr Khan was arrested on Tuesday. The newspaper quoted a NAB source as saying that Khan would be produced before an accountability court today. The source said, “We will try our best to keep them in custody for at least four to five days.”
It is noteworthy that under the new amendments in the National Accountability Ordinance, 1999, the period of physical custody granted by any court has been reduced from 90 days to 14 days. “We will seek physical remand of a maximum period of 14 days from the court,” he said, adding that the court is expected to grant remand of at least four to five days.
The anti-corruption watchdog justified the arrest of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chairman through the Rangers. Asked about the PTI chief’s condition, the source said Khan was detained in a “comfortable atmosphere” at the Rawalpindi/Islamabad regional headquarters of the NAB.
Khan will not be “treated harshly” but will only be questioned about his alleged involvement in the case and seeking monetary benefits. In an official statement, NAB also gave details about the case against Khan.
