G7 countries and the EU in the 11th sanctions package against the Russian Federation want to ban gas imports on a number of routes

May 14, 2023

The G7 countries and the European Union (EU), as part of the 11th package of anti-Russian sanctions, are considering the possibility of banning the import of gas pipeline from the Russian Federation on certain routes. According to the Financial Times, referring to the draft statement of the G7 leaders, we are talking about the areas where Moscow has already reduced its supplies.

The newspaper says the move is aimed at preventing the resumption of gas pipeline exports from Russia to countries like Poland and Germany, where supplies were effectively cut off last year.

The document also says that the G7 countries and the EU intend to approve the relevant provision at the Hiroshima summit, scheduled for May 19-21.

A few days earlier, US President Joe Biden had announced his intention to personally attend the next G7 summit. He expects nothing to stop him, including the risk of the country defaulting.
