Caen (France) : The 76th Cannes Film Festival opened in France on Tuesday with the premiere of period drama Jean du Barry starring Johnny Depp and based on Louis XV. This year this film festival will run for 12 days. Protests over changes in the pension system in France for the past few months and the ongoing strike of screenwriters in Hollywood may also have an impact on this French Riviera festival. The festival will see stars such as Natalie Portman, Leonardo DiCaprio, Cate Blanchett, Sean Penn, Alicia Vikander and Scarlett Johansson.

At the same time, at the opening ceremony of the festival on Tuesday, actor Michael Douglas will be honored with the ‘Palm Door’ award for his outstanding career and his contribution to the cinema world. This year, the jury of the film festival is headed by Swedish filmmaker Ruben Ostlund, a two-time Palme d’Or awardee. He had won the award last year for the social satire The Triangle of Sadness.

The rest of the jury members include Brie Larson, Paul Dano, French director Julia Ducorno, Argentinian filmmaker Damien Sziffron, Afghan director Ateeq Rahimi, French actor Denis Menochet, Moroccan filmmaker Mariam Tourjani and Zambian-Welsh director Rungano Nyoni. .
