Reshaping Perspectives and Catalyzing Diplomatic Evolution

Helsinki Commission hails US agreement to supply NATO F-16s to Ukraine

According to the Washington Post and CNN, the United States of America will not interfere with the transfer of F-16 planes to Kyiv by the allies.

Previously, members of the US Helsinki Commission sent a letter to US President Joe Biden with a request for the issuance of licenses for the re-export of F-16 fighter jets to Denmark, the Netherlands and Norway to to make their transfer to Ukraine possible.

In the letter, the commission members referred to a recent meeting in Ukraine with Volodymyr Zelenskyy, during which he explained that the F-16s would not only save Ukrainian lives, but also protect the sea lanes that provide supplies. world in wheat. This potent weapon can provide the edge Ukraine needs to protect its freedom, and the only obstacle to its delivery remains presidential approval, the document says.

“These fighters were specifically designed and acquired by our allies in order to contain the threat of Russian aggression. Now, as Ukraine fights alone against Russia and suffers the total annihilation of its people, these weapons must be used for what they were created: to protect the democratic peoples of Europe,” the document states.

Representatives of the Helsinki Commission also stressed the importance of providing fighter jets as part of US commitments to support Ukraine in its fight against Russian aggression.

“The F-16 is a powerful weapon that could very well play a decisive role in Ukraine’s coming counteroffensive and provide the decisive advantage needed to force the Kremlin to abandon this genocidal war. The United States is determined to provide Ukraine with all the means it needs to protect us all from Russian aggression. The F-16 re-export permit not only fulfills this obligation, it does not even oblige the United States to supply aircraft. Given the enormous stakes that you have so often and clearly articulated, allowing re-exports is entirely in our national security interests, our human rights obligations and, in fact, requires no cost,” the letter reads. .

The Commission on Security and Cooperation in Europe, also known as the United States Helsinki Commission, is an independent United States government commission charged with enforcing the Helsinki Accords and promoting global security by promoting human rights. people, democracy, economic, environmental and military cooperation in 57 countries. . The commission is made up of nine members of the US Senate, nine members of the House of Representatives, and one member from the Department of State, Department of Defense, and Department of Commerce.
