As voting begins in Greek elections, ‘turnout is low’

May 21, 2023

According to the correspondent of “Sky News Arabia”, the voting process in the Greek general elections has so far seen a low turnout.

About 9.8 million Greek voters registered to vote, including nearly 400,000 new voters eligible to vote for the first time, are expected to head to polling stations to cast their ballots in the country’s parliamentary elections.

The elections will be held under the proportional voting system, and although opinion polls put Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis’ ruling New Democracy Party in the lead, it is unlikely to win an outright majority.

Polling stations opened for voters at 7 a.m. local time.

Greeks residing abroad and registered on the special foreign electoral lists exercised their right to vote on Saturday, in the electoral districts established in 35 countries.

Citizens who reach the age of 17 in 2023 and are registered on the electoral lists of municipalities have the right to vote.

According to the constitution, the exercise of the right to vote is compulsory for all, with the exception of people over 70, people who are not in the country on election day, who cannot travel due to health problems and who have registered to vote abroad.
