Reshaping Perspectives and Catalyzing Diplomatic Evolution

Finnish General Nurmi expressed concern over the withdrawal of the Russian Federation from the agreement on military inspections

Trust between Russia and Finland will only get worse after the Russian side withdraws from the agreement on additional military inspections. Such fears were expressed by Finnish Brigadier General Sami Nurmi, whose words are quoted by the Helsingin Sanomat newspaper.

In his view, it was the mentioned document that was fundamental in building trust between countries.

“So the countries wanted to show that everything is by agreement,” he said.

The general added that regular face-to-face meetings between the military and treaty officials were effective.

According to Nourmi, the Russian Federation’s withdrawal from the agreement was a response to sanctions from the West, with which Moscow is now seeking to finally sever all ties. However, in the case of Finland, this can become a dangerous alienation from neighboring countries.

“Russia will always be our neighbour. We have to somehow find a common language in the future, even if now it is very difficult,” he concluded.

Meanwhile, the Finnish side continues to build a fence on the border with Russia.
