Violent clashes and artillery fire
Heavy clashes and artillery shelling broke out in the Sudanese capital, Khartoum, on Sunday, and residents reported airstrikes shortly after the end of a 24-hour ceasefire that sparked a brief lull in eight weeks of fighting between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF).
Witnesses said the fighting that erupted between the two sides on Sunday was one of the fiercest battles in weeks and included clashes on the ground in the densely populated neighborhood of Haj Youssef in the city of Bahri, which, with neighbors Khartoum and Omdurman, forms the capital of the triangle around the confluence of the Nile.
After the ceasefire expired at 6 a.m. local time, witnesses said clashes and artillery fire resumed in northern Omdurman.
They also indicated that clashes took place in the south and center of Khartoum and at Shambat on the Nile in the city of Bahri, up to the strategic bridge of Halfaya which leads to the city of Omdurman.
Hostilities broke out between the two sides on April 15 due to differences between the army and the Rapid Support Forces. The conflict has killed hundreds of civilians and displaced more than 1.9 million people, causing a major humanitarian crisis feared to spread across the volatile region.
