Tunisia faces a difficult test. Is it subject to bargaining for European support?

During her visit to Tunisia on Sunday, accompanied by the Italian Prime Minister, Giorgia Meloni, and the Dutch Prime Minister, Mark Rutte, the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, declared that the Union is ready to provide up to to 900 million euros to support the Tunisian economy, to which will be added an additional 150 million euros which will be immediately provided to support the budget once “the required agreement has been found”.

Tunisian experts, who spoke to Sky News Arabia, said the European Union was pressuring Tunisia to resolve the migration crisis plaguing European countries.

A test for Tunisian diplomacy in the face of European interests and pressures

Tunisian political analyst Nizar Al-Jilidi described what his country is going through as the toughest test for Tunisian diplomacy, saying in a statement to “Sky News Arabia” that Tunisia “is facing increasing pressure from current time due to the repercussions of the economic crisis, and President Kais Saeed insists on rejecting it altogether.” complete, and considers them as unacceptable dictates.

According to Jlidi, the Tunisian president has so far rejected pressure related to the immigration dossier, saying in categorical statements that “Tunisia will not turn into a border guard for European countries”.

Al-Jalidi explained that EU leaders “did not only come to Tunisia to help the country economically, but they came with a European mandate to talk about protecting their interests and maritime borders, starting with Tunisia, which is an important transit country”. for illegal immigrants.

The political analyst pointed out that 27 European countries passed the Dublin law, which provides for the return of irregular migrants arriving in the European area to transit countries, including Tunisia, denying that the legislation would be absolutely bad for Tunisia. if she accepted it, provided he knows how to invest it in her favor.

Jlidi added that “Tunisia must know how to deal with European demands which seem harsh and which can be diverted in favor of reviving the battered economy”.

Does Tunisia accept European diktats?

Experts do not expect Tunisia to accept all the dictates that the International Monetary Fund and European countries try to impose on it. Tunisian economist Hassan Bali believes that the solution to the crisis is to achieve a breakthrough in the economic record, so that the country can act with the logic of force.

In this regard, Bali stressed the need for the government to work towards a sustainable and effective economic plan and to carry out the necessary reforms to boost economic growth and attract investment.

He stressed the need to “pay attention to social affairs and improve the living conditions of citizens, work to improve state performance and reduce corruption, seek solutions to strengthen confidence in the Tunisian economy, stimulate domestic and foreign investment, reduce borrowing policies and build on plans to attract investment and support national projects.

According to Bali, “the government cannot continue to retreat and evade its responsibilities in the face of this crisis, and we must act quickly and forcefully to overcome the challenges we face”.

Tunisia is not a border guard for Europe

Tunisian President Kais Said said in a speech broadcast by “Mosaique” radio station: “The country will not act as a border guard for European countries.”

“The solution will not come at the expense of Tunisia,” Said said in his speech during a visit to the coastal city of Sfax in the center of the country.

The radio broadcast the news of SaĂŻd’s “surprise visit” to the city of Sfax, the main point of departure for migrants wishing to reach Italy, on the eve of the arrival of the Italian Prime Minister and the European delegation in Tunisia .
