Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan asserts Armenia’s freedom to decide on Russian border guards near Nakhichevan

Armenia’s task is to resolve the issue of the presence of Russian border guards on the section of the road between the main part of Azerbaijan and Nakhichevan, said Prime Minister of the republic Nikol Pashinyan during a speech in parliament. According to him, as reported by TASS, if Yerevan wants to remove them, it will do so.

The wording recorded in paragraph 9 of the document of November 9 does not mean that Russian FSB forces should be present on the road connecting Azerbaijan with Nakhichevan. The presence of Russian border troops in Armenia is a task that Armenia must resolve, Pashinyan said.

Pashinyan also said that in the draft peace agreement between Yerevan and Baku, the parties agreed on the preface points and 13  out of 16 articles. He stressed that the approved part provides for a provision on the establishment of diplomatic relations between Armenia and Azerbaijan. Later, the prime minister added that all points of the agreement were agreed upon and Yerevan invites Baku to sign the peace agreement.

On September 9, Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan expressed hope that the countries would be able to sign the document in a short time. According to him, this would be the beginning of long-term stability in the region.
