Ankara — Türkiye and the United Kingdom have successfully completed the first round of negotiations for a comprehensive Free Trade Agreement (FTA), marking a pivotal step in expanding bilateral ties beyond the post-Brexit continuity accord. Held in Ankara from June 23 to July 2, the talks aimed to reshape the existing trade framework and inject new momentum into economic relations between the two nations.

This initial round focused on broadening the scope of cooperation across key sectors, including services, investment, and digital trade. Both delegations agreed to prioritize mutual access in areas such as financial services, Islamic finance, healthcare, and audiovisual content. The negotiations also delved into agricultural trade enhancements, geographic indications, and support measures for small- and medium-sized enterprises. Sustainability, labor standards, and women’s economic empowerment were integral themes throughout the discussions.

With bilateral trade volumes reaching approximately $22 billion in 2024, Türkiye views the UK as one of its most significant economic partners. The UK, for its part, ranked Türkiye as its 16th-largest trading partner, with £28 billion in mutual commerce last year. British government figures also suggest that the economic relationship supports more than 57,000 jobs in the UK. Against this backdrop, the new trade deal is expected to deepen integration across emerging sectors and ensure regulatory alignment without compromising national standards.

The emphasis on customs simplification and digital infrastructure development suggests that both Ankara and London intend to establish a next-generation agreement—one that not only boosts trade figures but also reflects modern economic priorities such as innovation, climate-conscious growth, and strategic resilience. A second round of talks is expected before the end of 2025.

As noted by Anadolu Agency, the talks represent a renewed phase of strategic engagement between Türkiye and the UK, rooted in mutual economic interest and geopolitical cooperation.
