Moscow — Russian missiles and drones targeted Ukraine’s capital early Sunday, killing at least two civilians and wounding dozens in residential areas during subzero temperatures. The strikes occurred hours before Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy departed for Florida to meet US President Donald Trump, whose administration has prioritized rapid negotiations to end the conflict now in its 1,403rd day.

Explosions rocked Kyiv’s Solomianskyi and Sviatoshynskyi districts as Ukrainian air defenses intercepted 87 of 92 incoming projectiles, including Kinzhal hypersonic missiles and Shahed drones. Several strikes hit residential buildings and energy infrastructure, causing power outages across multiple districts. Zelenskyy addressed the attacks on Telegram, noting Russia had rejected ceasefire proposals during the holiday period and increased strike intensity across fronts.

Russian commanders briefed President Vladimir Putin on reported advances in Donetsk and Zaporizhzhia regions, claiming capture of Myrnohrad, Rodynske, Artemivka, Huliaipole, and Stepnohirsk. In a televised statement from a command post, Putin said that if Kyiv rejects a peaceful settlement, “we will accomplish all the tasks before us by military means.” Ukraine’s General Staff reported ongoing defensive operations in these areas, with no confirmation of full territorial losses.

Ukraine’s military reported Russian forces launched thousands of shelling attacks, over 4,000 drones, multiple airstrikes with guided bombs. and over 6,800 drone launches. Civilian casualties included eight killed in Donetsk strikes on Kostiantynivka and Kramatorsk, three dead in Zaporizhzhia from a drone attack on evacuees, and one woman killed by artillery in Kherson. Both sides report significantly higher enemy losses than independently verified figures.

Zelenskyy’s meeting in Mar-a-Lago follows months of US pressure for territorial concessions to achieve ceasefire. Trump has repeatedly urged Kyiv to negotiate, stating during his campaign he could end the war quickly. Zelenskyy carries a 20-point plan seeking security guarantees and restoration of 1991 borders. European leaders scheduled after the UStalks expressed concern over potential unraveling of sanctions, including EU LNG import restrictions targeting Russia.

Recent fighting near Pokrovsk follows patterns from Pokrovsk battles last fall, where Russian forces used glide bombs against fortified positions. Zaporizhzhia clashes continue across Russo-Ukrainian war fronts strained by logistics challenges. Trump’s earlier signals on negotiations prompted varied responses from Moscow and Kyiv.

Ukrainian security services report striking Russian energy facilities this year in response to infrastructure attacks, including destroying Russian energy facilities that supply military operations. Russian defenses intercepted over 100 Ukrainian drones across six regions overnight. NATO monitors increased Baltic airspace activity amid the escalation.

Putin’s statement aligns with If Kyiv refuses peace, we will take everything by force rhetoric emphasizing military resolution absent diplomatic progress. Ukraine maintains its objectives include full territorial restoration. Winter conditions exacerbate civilian hardship with power shortages affecting heating across multiple regions.

Global markets track potential ceasefire impacts on energy and grain shipments through the Black Sea. Casualty estimates vary widely: Ukraine reports 1.2 million Russian losses since 2022; independent analysts place total deaths below 500,000 for both sides. Zelenskyy’s European itinerary after Florida underscores divided Western approaches to sanctions and military aid.

Moscow claims strategic advantages from recent territorial claims; Kyiv emphasizes defensive successes repelling larger assaults. The Mar-a-Lago meeting occurs amid active combat operations testing both militaries’ winter capabilities. Power restoration efforts continue in Kyiv as emergency services clear strike debris from residential zones.

Russia Ukraine War Day 1403 reflects patterns established since February 2022,  territorial claims, infrastructure strikes, diplomatic maneuvering, and competing casualty narratives. Both leaderships frame military operations as tied to negotiation positions ahead of the US summit.
