The Athletics are no longer baseball’s feel good surprise story. They are becoming a legitimate American League contender, and on Saturday night at Camden Yards they exposed every weakness currently haunting the Baltimore Orioles.

Behind Brent Rooker’s three run homer, Aaron Civale’s clutch escape act, and another disciplined offensive performance, the Athletics rolled past the Orioles 6-2 to secure their third straight victory and continue their remarkable rise atop the AL West standings.

For Baltimore, the loss felt far more damaging than just another mark in the standings.

The Orioles dropped to 17-23 and have now lost eight of their last 10 games. Boos echoed throughout Camden Yards as another frustrating performance unfolded, with the club continuing to struggle offensively while questions surrounding its expensive offseason pitching gamble grow louder by the day.

Everything began unraveling for Baltimore in the third inning.

After already falling behind 1-0 in the opening frame, Orioles starter Shane Baz found himself in trouble again when the Athletics patiently extended the inning. Nick Kurtz reached base and eventually set the table for Rooker, who demolished a poorly located cutter deep into the seats for a three run blast that instantly shifted the atmosphere inside Camden Yards.

The homer was Rooker’s fifth of the season and continued his recent surge at the plate. Oakland’s lineup repeatedly pressured Baz throughout the night, combining patience with timely aggression in hitter-friendly counts.

Baz’s outing quickly became another painful reminder of Baltimore’s growing pitching concerns.

The hard throwing right hander arrived during the offseason with major expectations after the Orioles acquired him from Tampa Bay and immediately signed him to a five year, $68 million extension, the largest contract Baltimore has ever given a pitcher. Instead of becoming the ace level presence the Orioles desperately needed, Baz has struggled badly through the opening weeks of 2026.

Saturday’s performance only intensified those concerns.

Baz lasted just 4 2/3 innings, allowing five runs while battling inconsistent command and poor pitch execution. One particularly brutal moment came in the fifth inning when he was charged with a pitchclock violation for ball four against Rooker before being removed from the game. His ERA climbed to 5.48 through eight starts.

Meanwhile, Aaron Civale’s performance delivered exactly the type of veteran outing contenders rely on.

The Athletics right hander did not dominate statistically, but he completely controlled the biggest moment of the game. After Baltimore loaded the bases with nobody out in the fifth inning, the Orioles appeared ready to climb back into the contest with the heart of the order coming to the plate. Instead, Civale calmly escaped the jam without allowing a single run.

First, he struck out Adley Rutschman. Then he forced Pete Alonso and Samuel Basallo into harmless fly balls, leaving Orioles fans stunned and silencing the crowd’s brief burst of energy.

“It was my mess that I made, and I was happy to be able to clean it up,” Civale said afterward following one of the defining sequences of the Athletics’ season so far.

The veteran right hander improved to 4-1 on the year and continued an excellent run of form. Civale has quietly stabilized Oakland’s rotation, posting a 2.61 ERA through eight starts while giving the Athletics reliable innings nearly every time he takes the mound.

The Athletics are getting contributions everywhere.

Nick Kurtz continued his breakout campaign by doubling twice and extending his on base streak to 33 consecutive games, the longest active streak in Major League Baseball. Shea Langeliers added two RBIs, while Colby Thomas chipped in with another insurance run in the ninth inning.

Oakland’s lineup finished with 11 hits and repeatedly forced Baltimore pitchers into uncomfortable situations. More importantly, the Athletics once again looked composed in every key moment, showing the kind of dominance that is rapidly redefining the modern era for emerging contenders across professional sports.

“We’re playing really well right now,” Rooker said after the game. “I think everybody’s contributing in a big way.”

Baltimore’s offense, on the other hand, continues searching for answers.

Despite collecting nine hits, the Orioles stranded 10 runners and repeatedly failed in pressure situations. Their best scoring opportunity disappeared during Civale’s fifth inning escape, and by the late innings the frustration inside Camden Yards had fully returned.

Pinch  hitter Colton Cowser finally broke the shutout with a two run single in the eighth inning, but the rally arrived far too late to seriously threaten Oakland’s control of the game.

Baltimore’s continuing offensive collapse has intensified scrutiny around a roster that entered the season expecting to contend near the top of the American League after several aggressive offseason moves, including the addition of Pete Alonso’s power bat.

The Orioles now face serious questions about the future if the recent slide continues deeper into May.

Meanwhile, the Athletics continue proving that the future of sport may increasingly resemble organizations built around fearless young talent, aggressive roster decisions, and relentless offensive pressure.

Tempers never exploded Saturday, but after several recent examples of MLB on field altercations, Baltimore’s visible frustration again became one of the night’s biggest storylines.

The Athletics now have a chance to complete a stunning road sweep on Sunday behind Luis Severino, while Baltimore will hand the ball to former Athletics pitcher Chris Bassitt in an attempt to stop the growing panic surrounding the club.
